Last Monday, October 6, our 8th-grade students held the first Model United Nations (MUN) contest at our school — a remarkable display of our students’ growing communication, research, and leadership skills.

This contest was part of the Innovation Project granted to the English Department last semester, aimed at promoting meaningful learning experiences through critical thinking, global awareness, and public speaking in English.

At the beginning of the semester, all 8th graders worked in class to learn how to represent different countries in the MUN context, researching international issues, diplomatic language, and global policies to prepare for this culminating event.

The debate topic for this edition was “Should AI be limited in education and social media?” Delegates represented a diverse range of countries, bringing multiple perspectives to the discussion:

Mauria Elías – Germany

Emma Savastano – Chile

Belén Arcos – Japan

Emma Torres – Brazil

Matteo Mencagli – Italy

Jose Tomás Rigo-Righi – United Kingdom

Rocco Mussuto / Santiago Mangiamarchi – United States of America

Emilia Marcel / Antonia Salazar – Nigeria

Octavio Salas – India

The event was hosted by two senior students, Juan Luis Volante Torres and Alessandra Mussuto Doberti, both former members of the school’s debate team, who guided the session with professionalism and enthusiasm.

The jury was composed of students from the FCE Elective English course — Julieta Guerrero, Camila Mercader, and Agustina Latorre — who took on the challenging task of evaluating the delegates’ performance.

While the judges deliberated, a group of senior students from IV°A delivered a powerful rendition of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, adding inspiration to the event’s closing moments.

We warmly congratulate Octavio Salas, representing India, who received the award for Best Delegate. Kudos to all the participants who stepped up to debate such an important and current topic in a foreign language — taking one step forward in becoming true Cittadini del mondo.
